Manali, Manali, Himachal Pradesh, India

About the event

Lahaul and Spiti are at a remote corner of the world to be accessed by  traversing the highest mountain passes in the world. From Manali, one  has to cross the Rohtang Pass and the tricky Rani Nala before that.  The proximity of Lahaul and Spiti to Tibet means that there is more than  a fair bit of Buddhist influence in the region. These are known as gompas in the local language. In Lahaul, there is the 800-year-old Guru Ghantal gompa  situated at the confluence of rivers Chandra and Bagha. The Sha-Shur  monastery derives its name from the blue pines surrounding it and is  famous for the large thangka paintings and invaluable wall paintings of all the 84 Buddhist siddhis.  Spiti valley is the most important centre of Buddhism in Himachal and  the monasteries here are a favourite with the Dalai Lama himself.

Komic village, at an altitude of about 4600 Mtrs, is popularly known as  the village housing the highest motorable monastery in the world, the  Tangyud Monastery.

Hikkim village is popularly known for the highest post office in the world and the highest polling station in the world

Day 4: Kaza to Nako via Tabo & dhankar. Today we start we visit Dhankar gompa first, then visit Tabo monastery.  The Oldest Buddhist Monastery in India. Built in 996 AD, this monastery is over a thousand years old, and considered the oldest in India. We will continue the journey to Nako lake. Overnight at Nako.

Meals Included: Breakfast & Dinner

Day 5: Nako to Kalpa

I will recommend starting early on this day because it could be a long journey because of bad roads again. Between Reckong Peo and Pooh will be a really bad section of the road but will improve after that.

Kalpa is situated at an elevation of 9711 feet and is located in the Sutlej Valley of Kinnaur district. Often known as the connector of Spiti, Kalpa is also the base of Kinner Kailash, a Shivling peak rising up to 20,000 Ft). Kinnaur Kailash is visible from all over Kalpa and tends to change colors based on the reflections throughout the day.
